Yom HaShoah 2026: Flames of Resistance – Lights of Remembrance

This evening marks the beginning of Yom HaShoah. This day is dedicated to the memory of the Shoah and specifically to Jewish resistance. Here in the Altenburg region, we honor this memory by sharing the stories of those who stood up against destruction—through combat, through intelligence, or through the power of bearing witness. Today we remember those whose voices were violently silenced – and those who refused to be silent. From the armed resistance in the ghettos to the witnesses in the courtrooms: their struggle is our duty to remember.

Biographies from our region impressively demonstrate this courage and strength of self-assertion:

Abram "Abrasza" BlumAbram "Abrasza" Blum (1905–1943): An engineering student in Altenburg and a leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization (ŽOB). An architect of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, he fought until the end, escaped through the sewers, but was eventually captured and murdered.Abraham Goldberg, 1998 in Altenburg

Abraham (Adolf) Goldberg (1923–2010): Humiliated at his school in Altenburg as a "specimen" for Nazi racial theory because his blond hair and blue eyes were seen as a "deceptive" threat. He survived the Janowska camp with the help of officer Hans Hartman and later served as a crucial witness in trials against Nazi war criminals.

Nathan Jakubowicz (born 1905): A former engineer student at the "Technikum" Altenburg who joined the "Chapaev" partisan unit in 1943. He fought in the "Rail War" against the Wehrmacht and worked in intelligence (Razvedka), forging documents and translating enemy mail.

Kurt Kohn (Resistance)Kurt Kohn (1918–2005): Lived in Altenburg in the 1930s before joining the French Resistance as "Pierre Marty" or "Pierre Claude Flament" engaging in sabotage against the German occupiers.Max Fruchtmann

Max Fruchtmann (1908–1967): Born in Meuselwitz, he was a former prisoner of the Sachsenburg and Dachau concentration camps. Forced to emigrate in 1937, he returned in 1945 as a US Army investigator to uncover Nazi crimes in his home region.

These life stories demonstrate that Jewish resistance had many faces. Let us today read the names of those we have lost and honor the stories of those who resisted.

We remember the Jewish citizens of the Altenburg region who were persecuted and murdered:
