The East Thuringian town of Altenburg with its about 33.000 inhabitants is the intellectual and cultural center of the Altenburg County. The former residential town, documentary proofed in 976 for the first first time by Emperor Otto II., can look back on over 1000 years of history. World famous Altenburg is as town of Skat and playing cards. The still largely preserved historic city with numerous architectural treasures gives Altenburg an exceptional and truly unique flair.
The many-towered silhouette is dominated by the huge palace complex in the center, in its walls the well-known castle and playing card museum is housed. However, the most significant museum of Altenburg is the Lindenau-Museum. It houses a unique collection of ancient pottery and early Italian panel paintings. The Italian collection is the largest of its kind north of the Alps. Large cultural attraction is the theatre which has a long tradition in the town. Around the newly introduced district town Altenburg lying is the county called "Altenburger Land". He was formed by the former counties Schmölln and Altenburg on 1 July 1994 as the most eastern district of the Free State of Thuringia. In addition to the five communities with municipal law (Altenburg, Gößnitz, Lucka, Meuselwitz and Schmölln) the Altenburger Land is rich of picturesque villages, nestled in the Leipzig lowlands.
